Master Arrows
Imagine way back in the later 70s when punk was starting on the scene and The Stranglers were doing an excellent job at offending people. Darts had began to get some real TV coverage firstly with a programme called 'The Indoor League.' Many new names became well known after everyone had seen two Welshman the late Leighton Rees and Alan Evans on television as contemporary darts giants of their time.
TV indeed popularised darts from smoke filled bar rooms to our screens. Champions from John Lowe, Eric Bristow to Scotland's Jocky Wilson ensured we all had a dart board in our bedrooms. It is hard to believe that the health police once tolerated the smoking and boozing from famous darts players on TV but these were before the days of the politically correct times.
In 2005 John Lowe's autobiography was published and as a miner's son he made good fortune out of a darts career. The book deals with his personal life from childhood days, love of motorcycles and from relationships in life to marriage. John Lowe also explains his first experience of darts (by chance) to his rise to fame through much dedication and practise.
So coffee in hand, spectacles on, time for a good read and "Let's Play Darts."
The book is called 'Old Stoneface' and in hardback origanally priced £17.99.

Decades for Old Punks!
The Scottish Captain brings you tonight a view from the slightly older generation of punks. In the 1970s life was so much simpler when you went into a corner grocer shop everything was laid out as it should be that is goods you would realise were on the shelf. Power cuts were fun and tripping was still celebrating spacehoppers and action men and sherbets and fun adverts on the television. many of the TV programmes had been good and this lasted into the 1980s. Comedies were well funny covering classics such as Bless This House and Man About The House to George and Mildred or Robin's Nest.
Further on saw Prisoner Cell Block H in the 1980s I presume for classic Aussie drama forget Neighbours or Home And Away it was better with real Australian drama.
Great Stuff!
Robin's Nest - with Thames TV ident (Theme tune better than programme)
Prisoner Cell Block H - End Credits

Space Travel
If the Scottish Captain had a tardis where in time should be reached? I fancy going forward in time and not backwards. Why because technological and scientific progress is accelerating at a rapid rate. Computers this year are going to advance as will computer programmes or software. Broadband connection speed will improve although in the UK the Internet connection spreed trails behind that of Europe and the US. So with technological improvements what was never imagined with the computer chip has come true. In my childhood days the robots envisaged to serve you tea and toast and do the household cleaning never came to pass.

Taste & Style
What music or bands would you admit to liking? I find it a difficult question to answer for instance I would admit to liking post-punk such as Public Image Ltd but hide the fact I also like Gilbert O' Sullivan. I also like The Cure which are cool but do not admit I like Sugababes also at least not in public. Or what about Mel C since she left the Spice Girls she became the coolest and best solo Spice of the group. Kate Bush commands a lot of respect since she proved herself a great artist beyond the crazy woman image on Wuthering Heights video for her first single. When it comes to live acts I am pleased I saw The Damned earlier this decade and Thin Lizzy during the 1980s but ashamed I also saw Status Quo live on stage. As a young teenager later 70s I dressed as an individual during the punk generation. However I find it a crime to admit on a blog I wore Bay City Roller trews at age 10 years old. The past is the past but the present is here and now to correct all our previous mistakes and live for the moment in perfect taste and style.
Below perhaps difficult to admit I liked the old 1970s adverts on the TV better than some of the programmes that had better theme tunes anyhow to boogie about the house and behind the armchair or couch.

New Habits
Time to put New Year resolutions into action. I heard on radio that it is best to break into new habits and if intending to try something new give yourself three weeks of nine at first. I suppose this need apply to any new routine. Small goals in targets of achievement not larger over ambitious goals in which you to try too hard and hence ultimate failure.
I admit to liking only some of Cat Stevens (now Yusaf Islam) early work. But what I like is very good check out the video below. Hard Headed Woman by Stevens has power and driving force for a song on acoustic spendid stuff!

Indoors me and cup of coffee
Can never get the perfect cup of coffee, better if I drop the instant and go back to filter coffee. Anyhow I am indoors because it is dark or very dull outside and when this is supposed to be a Happy New Year I like instead to constantly complain about the weather. And why not? Where is the daylight? None to be found in Scotland at this time of year says the Scottish Captain.
Now would the weather in Florida not be good for Scotland? Yes bring it here and liven up the place we can have palm trees and tropical plants to boot! Anyone for a cocktail? No perhaps not back to reality sitting in dull living rooms in Scotland with clouds in our coffee.
Thank god for computers I would despair without my friends in cyberspace. All the friends where I live are in the pubs. No use saying get a life I am too old to join a tennis club and I hate golf. So should everyone this time of year.
Think I will post a Max Headroom video (that computer animated / simulation whatever chap from the 80s) some time soon. But now is the theme from Star Trek below this text. Yes the original theme which I will watch with coffee in hand before it gets too cold to drink. Sugar good at bottom of cup.

New Year New Expectations some Old Hat
Well Scotland woke up this morning to the usual country-wide hangover and on radio Scottish justice minister Kenny McAskill panicked in alarm at the number of emergency calls after the bells. I put on the TV last night to see Jools Holland bring in the New Year but quickly turned it over after we had entered 2008.
2008 will no doubt see me watch very little TV but pay through the nose for my TV licence to view channels that should be called 'BBC knows best' and I cannot block the Beeb and throw my licence in the trash. Perhaps the EBC should be called London knows best and we are just the moaning jocks up north.
Perhaps of more relevance is your New Year resolutions that have a better sell-by date if they last beyond February. Seriously the Scottish Captain recommends only achievable small goals should be set as aiming big at a target too high often results in failure. I aim to be more organised and tidy this year but please do not equate my expectations with this blog and it's presentation.
The better news for all of us not only do we have our own government in Scotland (well government of sorts) but our very own Scottish Captain in cyberspace land. The Scottish Captain is of that age when watching Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds was the norm for a youngster. You could even dress like the captain now there's a revelation.
Being of the generation that rockets to middle age through the light years I am more than happy to seek out old 70s kids programmes on YouTube of my childhood. Belle and Sebastion, White Horses but not really Andy Pandy who retains the power to give the over 40 people serious nightmares. I like the theme tunes and why not? When you despair at the evil capitalists I can suggest better and maybe worse. Here is a video with the theme tune of White Horses time to get out your breakfast plastic bowles and pass the milk. Enjoy!

Launch of a Scottish Captain
Happy New Year / Blidahnha mhath ur a' Ghaidhlig (Happy New Year in Scottish Gaelic.) The Scottish Captain has reached your homes via cyberspace and is what it says on the packet. Over 2008, while capitalism sucks and causes more wars than Marxists get the blame for, this blog will cover my interests and disgusts at a world gone mad trying it's best to remain light-hearted and above the average lot in pecking order.
Time to launch into cyberspace this Scottish Captain of sorts.
